Trauma

At the Mid Cities Counseling Center, our compassionate team of counselors offers therapy and treatment for trauma including PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) in-person in Crowley and Colleyville, and online for clients in Texas.

The Basics of Trauma

We often associate trauma with big, singular events including natural disasters, being affected by or witnessing a violent attack, or sudden death. And it is accurate to say that under these circumstances you may be traumatized.

However, trauma can also be more insidious, especially in early development, when children are exposed to repetitive situations that are unhealthy, unsafe, or emotionally and/or physically abusive. Similarly, first responders, members of the armed forces, and individuals who regularly witness violence and uncertainty over a longer period may also experience trauma.

Trauma is therefore considered exposure to distressing, stressful, or frightening experiences that may cause a struggle to cope with or emotionally regulate.

Types of Trauma

There are three main types of trauma:

  • Acute trauma – short-term or limited to a single event or experience
  • Chronic trauma – long-term and ongoing trauma that is a repetitive experience
  • Complex trauma – this is long-term exposure to multiple traumatic experiences that cause cumulative distress.

There are multiple subcategories of trauma including PTSD. PTSD is a psychiatric condition that can affect anyone, including children. However, PTSD is more likely to affect women and is more prevalent in certain ethnic groups.

A person suffering from PTSD could experience symptoms of intense negative feelings, flashbacks and/or nightmares, reactive emotions to loud noises and unexpected touches, and avoidance of similar situations.

Not everyone who is exposed to traumatic events may develop PTSD and symptoms of PTSD can subside eventually. However, if it’s beginning to harm you or your family, we recommend you seek mental health services for your continued well-being.
